ThrushDESCRIPTIONAn Infection in the mouth caused by the fungus Candida albicans, thrush manifests as white, slightly raised patches on the mucous membrane of the tongue, mouth, and throat. The mucous membrane beneath the patches becomes usually raw and bleeding. The overgrowth of this fungus results when the normal microbial balance is disturbed. It occurs most frequently in infants and in adults suffering from chronic illnesses. Treatment includes rest, a nutritious diet, restoration of a proper microbial balance, an application of gentian violet, and an antifungal antibiotic.
